Given the current state of the economy, this holiday season may be tougher on local families than in the past. However, some people are still able to dig into their pockets and find something to give to others.
George and Babs Holtzman, along with a slew of employees from their local real estate and insurance companies, are hosting three different drives: a canned (or dry) food drive for the Manna House, a drive for animal supplies for the Liberty Humane Shelter, and a collection of blankets and other gifts for the 108 residents at Coastal Manor.
“We’re trying to think about those who can’t take care of themselves or who most people don’t think about,” Babs Holtzman said. “Some of these people might not have any family.”
Many community members already have reached out to donate items, but Holtzman said they’re still looking for people or businesses to donate canned goods, pet supplies or money. They have collected all the necessary supplies for the Coastal Manor packages.
“When you’re out shopping, don’t forget to pick up a few extra supplies,” said Toby Mahon, chairman of the drive.
Mahon said the idea is for everyone to donate a few cans, a few dollars, or whatever they can. He said even small donations can significantly improve other residents’ holiday season. Holtzman agrees and said she hopes more community members will contribute, so they can give to more people.
“We just want to get the word out,” she said.
Holtzman said that she and her husband have been participating in holiday drives for much of their 30 years in business, but that working to help these three specific organizations has been the most fulfilling.
Donations can be dropped off at Holtzman Real Estate Services on Georgia Highway 196 between 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call 876-8886.
