No fatalities in our area

POSTED: January 5, 2009 4:15 p.m.
The Georgia State Patrol says 20 people died on state roads in traffic accidents over the holiday weekend, but none were inn our area.

"We had no fatalities and no serious wrecks," Hinesville Police Department Lt. Max Mclendon said Monday.

The holiday travel period lasted from midday New Year's Eve to midnight Sunday. The Hinesville police also reported low numbers of DUI incidents; HPD only arrested one motorist for drunk driving on New Year's Eve.

"There weren't any serious incidents to report," said Lt. Thomas Ovitt with HPD.

In line with their predictions, Georgia State Patrol spokesman, Gordy Wright, said there were 20 traffic related fatalities throughout the state as well as 3,507 traffic crashes and 870 resulting injuries.

Wright said that the number of crashes was higher than last year (3,108 crashes) due to inclement weather across the state on Friday.

"We saw a tremendous spike in traffic crashes on Friday night," he said. "610 is a tremendous number for one afternoon."

Wright said the numbers were also impacted because the holiday fell close to a weekend, which encouraged more travelers.
