LUDOWICI -- Long County will kick off its 2009 Relay for Life event Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Clubhouse in Rye Patch.
“We raised over $38,000 dollars last year, and we are setting our goals on surpassing that amount this year,” said 2009 LCRFL chairperson Amy Nutting.
This is the fourth year Long County has hosted a Relay for Life, and each year the event surpasses the previous year’s total. In 2006, the event had nine teams. In 2007, it had 14 teams, and last year, there were 17 teams.
“With the economy the way it is, I know it will be a challenge to surpass the amount we raised last year. But I think if we get a lot of support and people work hard, we can do it,” Nutting said. “I know we ought to have even more participation this year than we had last year.”
Last year, the top teams for raising money in the event were CMAD Construction, and the Super Skippers, with Betty Miller being the individual who raised the most money.
Relay for Life fundraisers benefit the American Cancer Society, which recently marked its twenty-fifth year of cancer research.
During the three years Long County hosted a Relay for Life event, the organization raised more than $112,000 nationally.
This year’s theme for the activity is “the silver screen.”
Anyone who wants to participate is welcome to attend the Feb. 5 kick-off party. Participants who don’t already belong to a team will be able to join an existing team.
The kick-off dinner begins at 6 p.m. Barbecue will be served and door prizes will be given away.
