Soldier found in Florida returns to her unit

POSTED: January 30, 2009 2:44 p.m.
A Fort Stewart soldier who was reported missing almost two weeks ago has returned to her unit.
Sgt. Charlana McKenzie, a soldier assigned to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, returned to her place of duty on Saturday.
Fort Stewart officials put out a news release Thursday stating that McKenzie’s chain of command will be responsible for administering any form of punishment for her absence without leave.
“Her commander will now determine what actions are appropriate based on her time away from the unit,” the release said.
McKenzie had been reported missing on Jan. 12, after she failed to pick her 14-year-old daughter up from school.
It was determined that the last time anyone had seen McKenzie at her southside Savannah home was on Sunday, Jan. 11.
Her unexplained absence caused some alarm, prompting Savannah-Chatham Police to conduct an investigation into her whereabouts.
A few days later, law enforcement authorities used video surveillance to confirm her presence at a hotel Jan. 16. The video indicated she was acting on her own and was not under duress.
The case was then turned back over to military officials at Fort Stewart.
