LUDOWICI — The 2009 Long County Relay for Life kicked off Feb. 5 at the Clubhouse in Rye Patch.
The kickoff drew more than twice as many people as last year.
“I think the turnout was fabulous. Last year we had around 20 people turnout for our kickoff, and tonight we had 54 here,” charity chairman, Amy Nutting said. “That’s just great”
Co-chairman Brandi Smiley said, “This is the fourth year that Long County has had a RFL, and it is the 25th year of the event. Last year there were 17 teams, and this year we are shooting for 20.”
Nutting said donations for the American Cancer Society fundraiser started coming in and teams organized before the kickoff.
“Betty Miller is already turning in money, and some of the teams have already started raising money,” she said.
According to Nutting, there already are eight teams registered, but more are needed.
“We want you to either start a team, or join a team,” she said.
Smiley said this year’s theme is the Silver Screen, so teams will pick movies as themes for costumes and campsites.
Nutting said teams will still have campsites, but unlike earlier relays, the walk will not go all night.
“We are going to start at
6 and go until around midnight. We think that this will help to increase our participation and make it easier on families with kids and some of our elderly participates,” Nutting said.
The kickoff began with donations to this year’s RFL, as several people at the party put change from their pockets in a jar for a drawing to support one team. That amounted to $52.50. Smiley drew the winner, The Wildlife Critters.
“Our team’s goal is $2,500 so we only have $2,447.50 to go now,” team captain Beverly Johnson said.
Clubhouse owner Tim Works also donated $2 from each meal served at the party.
Nutting informed the group that there would be a team captains meeting on Feb. 24 at the Long County High School media center.
She said the goal for this year’s relay is $40,000, “We raised over $38,000 last year… It won’t be easy, but I know we can do it.”
The 2009 relay is set for May 1 at Veterans Stadium.  For more information, go to www.relayforlife.org/longcounty or call CMAD Construction at 876-2667.
