LUDOWICI — The Long County Board of Education is considering moving the pre-K center from near the high school, to Smiley Elementary School.
“Knowing what we know now, and knowing our needs for the next school year, these changes give us needed classes at the middle and high school,” Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters said at a recent work session on the subject.
He said it would be the first phase of the total restructuring of Long County schools, which will culminate in building a new high school.
According to Waters, the majority of the first phase takes place at Smiley. It will include the addition of a 10 modular classrooms, a new six-classroom wing, an addition to the cafeteria/kitchen, and the paving of the parking lot between Veterans Stadium and the school.
In addition, a new physical education classroom/weight room will be added at the high school.
Waters said the six pre-K classes and the two rooms used for the school’s daycare center will be moved to Smiley. He also said the elementary school’s cafeteria would be increased by 100 feet.
Waters said the plans are being implemented and the goal is to have the parking lot paved, the modular classroom building and the PE/weight room completed by the beginning of the next school year.
The goal is to have the cafeteria/kitchen and the new wing at SES in operation by the end of next Christmas break.
According to Waters, the cost of the first phase is estimated to be $2.5 million.
The superintendent said having surveys completed, plans drawn, bids accepted, and funds secured from the state was in the works now.
