Members of Fort Stewart’s Forestry Division conducted controlled burns on more than 1,000 acres of land Friday during annual prescribed burns of the fort’s ranges. Fire planner David Pope said the burnings are mandated and make it safer for soldiers to train.
“One of the main reasons we do that is for the safety of the firing ranges. We've got 40, 000 acres of active live-fire ranges on Fort Stewart. We burn those in the winter to ensure the safety those ranges from wildfire,” Pope said.
