Thomas Hines, executive director of training operations for Savannah Technical College, told the Hinesville Rotary Club on Tuesday there’s no doubt we’re getting closer and closer to a globalized market. As a result, he said, Georgia needs to take measures to ensure we stay competitive in this new economic environment
With this goal in mind, Hines is promoting Gov. Sonny Perdue’s Georgia Work Ready Initiative, in which technical colleges partner with local employers to train (meeting specific federal standards) and put to work as many skilled individuals as possible.
“Our goal is to create a smarter, more skilled workforce,” Hines said.
Students who go through the program receive a certificate of training in a specific skill area that certifies them to work for local partnering businesses or in any of the other 22 states that have similar programs and the same standard for certification.
Hines said this benefits employees because they are guaranteed to acquire all the skills needed for the job and it also helps the hiring process become more objective.
In turn, employers are guaranteed skilled workers, which can drastically cut down on training costs among other monetary benefits.
The program is open to residents of Liberty, Bryan, Chatham and Effingham counties.
Hines said a county, by having an official Work Ready Program stands to see a significant amount of growth because more employers will want to come to the area.
For more information about the initiative, call (912) 443-3014, go to www.gaworkready.com, or e-mail Hines at thines@savannahtech.edu.
