The tree planted by the Morning Glory Garden Club on Arbor Day last month was in memory of member Faye Chandler.
Club President Judy Shippey welcomed all in attendance and read a proclamation, signed by Hinesville Mayor Jim Thomas, declaring Feb. 20 as Arbor Day in Hinesville.
She thanked employees of OMI for their help with the project. Employees Dave Hampton, Larry Baker and Henry Wilson attended, as did Helen Stripling and Louise Stewart, who had selected the yoshino cherry tree, contributed by the garden club.
Judy Mobley read a tribute to Chandler with her husband, Jim, in attendance, noting that this year’s tree is dedicated in her memory. Chandler was a longtime garden club member who passed away on Aug. 13, 2008.
Jim Chandler dropped a penny in the hole for good luck before the tree was put into place.
“Faye was a beautiful, courageous, Christian lady, a devoted wife and mother, a beloved friend and an outstanding citizen,” Mobley read.
Chandler was originally from North Carolina and maintained a home there, but she had live
in Hinesville for 30 years, was a real estate agent and a past president of the Hinesville Board of Realtors. She was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce, ABWA, Red Hat Liberty Bells and other civic organizations. She attended First Presbyterian Church.
The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872, in Nebraska. It’s date varies across the country depending on when growing season starts.
In Georgia it is marked on the third Friday of February In Liberty County each year, garden clubs plant memorial trees in parks.
