A pile-up, involving a flipped Escalade, brought after-school traffic to a standstill along Highway 84 on Monday afternoon.

The multi-vehicle accident was a like a chain-reaction, according to witnesses Victoria Burns and Lindsay Gaskin.

“I slowed down because I saw it coming,” said Burns, who called 911.

They were going west on 84 behind the Escalade in the right-hand lane.

A gray car, also going west, was at a complete stop in the turning lane to go into the National Guard Armory and Liberty County Recreation Department.

Burns saw the Escalade swerve in front of her and smash into the stationary car.

“So whenever he hit him, it was like an overcorrection kind of thing and he [the Escalade] probably flipped about three times,” Burns said. “He flipped completed over the car and landed right there.”

Burns estimated the Escalade was going about 40 miles per hour.

She said traffic was at a constant speed and there was enough distance between vehicles.

The two women said they ran to the car to find the driver and a boy, who “only had to have been four or five,” according to Burns.

“The boy was little bit out of it,” Burns said.

“He was just shaken up,” added Gaskin about the boy. “I got him out of the front seat and he just has cuts on his fingers. He was fine.”

The driver and passenger were sent to the hospital. It was not confirmed which medical facility they went to.

“I didn’t know it was going to be that bad,” Burns said. “But I knew he was going to rear-end that car. And as soon as he did it and he flipped –I thought I was going to lose my heart.”

The Hinesville police and fire departments responded and the Georgia State Patrol arrived at the scene a while later.

Details about the wreck will be reported as it becomes available.
