The massive Independence development project is continuing, potentially doubling the city of  Hinesville’s population by adding up to 10,000 new homes.
Part of the work on 2,700-acres of land adjacent to Fort Stewart was contracted to Genesis Real Estate Group, Liberty Consolidated Planning Commission director Sonny Timmerman, said.
The Settlement at Independence, in the northeast section of the property, was a focal topic for this month’s LCPC meeting, as Genesis finishes phase I, and begins work on phase II, he said.
“The site work (street, sewer, curb, gutter and building pads) for phase I should be done at the end of May, and the project will be handed over to Forest Homes so they can build the 147 townhouses that will be geared toward the military market,” Genesis Real Estate spokesman Mike Martin said.
The designs for an additional 70 houses in phase II are currently being drawn, and the site work will begin within the next 60 days, he said.
“We’re really looking forward to getting these housing units online,” City Manager Billy Edwards said. “This development will create much more diversity in our housing that we have never seen in this community.”
Independence is planned to comprise a heavy mix of commercial, retail and residential areas, accompanied by neighborhood parks and town centers.
The development could take another 7-10 years to complete.
