LUDOWICI — Chief Richard Robertson and the Ludowici Police Department learned Wednesday they had been selected by Jenny’s Heroes to get $25,000 to buy a 2009 Dodge Charger for a patrol car.
Jenny’s Heroes founder Jenny Jones was on hand, via a speaker-phone to inform Robertson of the award at the Ludowici City Hall.
“Richard, congratulations on your shiny new patrol car, and thank you for choosing a life of service to others,” Jones said as the surprised chief got on the phone.
Robertson knew nothing about the call, or that he and his department had been selected for the award.
The chief said he did apply for the award after learning about it on Jenny’s Heroes Web site.
Joining in on the celebration were about 30 people from the community, including the Mayor Myrtice Warren and members of the city council.
Warren said, “Words can’t express what she (Jones) has done for us. We are so appreciative. And we plan on sending her a letter of gratitude from the city and all of us.”
The mayor also praised Robertson and the LPD.
“They (LPD) do a great job, but a group is only as good as their leader, and Richard is very good at what he does.”
Though the day seemed to be focused on Robertson, the chief pointed out it was about his department.
“This isn’t about me, but it’s about the Ludowici Police Department, my goal is to have a whole new fleet of cars for the department, with no costs to the city,” he said.
According to Jones, Jenny’s Heroes is about individuals making a difference in their community. The organization gave away $1 million in 2008, and is planning on giving away another million this year. The maximum award to one project is $25,000 and, according to the Web site, the car to be purchased for the LPD will be the largest purchase for a single item.
Jones asked Robertson what was the most exciting thing that had happened at the LPD since he had been chief and he said, “A phone call from Jenny Jones.”
