Tiger boys lose heartbreaker, streak

POSTED: February 15, 2007 5:06 a.m.
The Bradwell Institute Tigers had their three-game win streak snapped in a heartbreaking loss to Wayne County this past Saturday, in Hinesville. The Tigers fell by a score of 45-47 to the Yellow Jackets.
“I’m disappointed, we had a three game streak going, and I wanted more, but they are a good ball team, and well coached”, said Bradwell Head Coach, David Jones.
In the first period it was about as even as it could be, and at the end of the period Wayne County had a narrow 10-9 lead.
The second period continued to be close as the Tigers scored 12 and Yellow Jackets scored 11, making it 21-21 at the break.
When the second half began, it appeared that Bradwell was going to assume control of the game as they went on a 7-0 run half way through the period. But by the end of the third, Wayne County had narrowed the gap, and was only down 30-33.
With 3:38 left in the game the Yellow Jackets reclaimed the lead
40-39, and the game went back and forth, until the Tigers sank a field goal with 38 seconds left in the game to go up 45-44.
Wayne County then got the ball and Vincent Merritt hit a 2-pointer, and was fouled on the shot. He then hit the free throw, to put the Jackets up 47-45 with just 23 seconds left in the game.
The Tigers worked the ball down the court, and senior Deon Villansencio went for a three pointer with 3 seconds left to play, but the ball was slightly off and it bounced off the rim. The final score was Wayne County 47 and Bradwell Institute 45.
“We made too many mistakes at critical times, and they just out played us”, said Jones.
In the game, the Tigers had two players score in double digits, juniors Rashad Peters had 10 points, and Robert Sims led all Tiger’s with 11 points.
The Tigers travel to Savannah this Tuesday (1/30) to take on the Savannah High Blue Jackets. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
