Armed robber hits Midway bank

No one injured

POSTED: July 8, 2009 10:50 a.m.

Local authorities were not commenting or releasing details about the Wednesday morning armed robbery at the Midway branch of The Heritage Bank, saying the investigation was turned over to the FBI.

James Floyd Jr., Heritage's chairman and CEO, however, confirmed no employees were injured during the crime.

"This morning there was an incident at our Midway branch. Thankfully, all of our employees are safe. They followed the security measures in place and handled the situation like the true professionals they are," Floyd said.

Ron Boccio, an employee from the Do it Best Hardware Store next to the bank, said he was working when the bank was hit.

"It happened probably around 10:15 or 10:25," Boccio said. "I didn't hear anything. All I saw was the Midway Police when they came."

The Courier is awaiting a call from FBI Public Affairs Officers in Savannah in regards to more details.

It is not the first time the bank, which is less than two miles off I-95, has been robbed.

In December 2005, a man walked into the bank near closing time and demanded money. He ran from the bank and was believed to have gotten into a vehicle near the corner of Martin and Ferguson roads.

He reportedly fired a small handgun outside the bank, possibly at a customer at the bank's ATM who had started following the suspect.

The bank was also robbed in February 2002. That time a man had broken a window to get inside the building overnight and surprised employees as they were opening for the day.

The branch has been open about 28 years and Heritage officials have announced plans for a new building on Highway 84 in Midway.

No arrests have been linked to either robbery directly.

It is expected that the investigation of the most recent crime will be turned over to the FBI.
