DNR, island reserve seeking opinions

POSTED: May 29, 2007 5:02 a.m.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve want to hear from decision-makers to help guide coastal training efforts in order to balance future growth and development on Georgia's coasts.
Decision-makers in coastal communities are invited to contribute their opinions by participating in a scientific study designed to identify important coastal issues. Decision-makers will also have the opportunity to identify the topics and issues for which they would like additional training and material either on a community or individual basis.
Qualified and eligible decision-makers should refer to the web sites of either the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Coastal Resources Division or the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve. Decision-makers are defined as people who, in a professional or volunteer capacity, make decisions affecting the health of coastal resources.
Decision-makers include, but are not limited to, local or state officials (mayors, commissioners, council members), volunteer organization members, state and federal agency employees, scientists, environmental educators, realtors, property association members, and others.
Decision-makers who live or work in Brantley, Bryan, Camden, Charlton, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, McIntosh or Wayne counties are eligible for participation in thestudy.
All responses will be assessed for professional eligibility before incorporation into the study results.
To participate in the coastal needs assessment, visit online at or the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve Coastal Training Program site, and click on the “Coastal training needs assessment” link.
For more information about the study, call Tom Beppler at (540) 432-1888, fax (540) 432-1892, email or online at
