Recently, Ryan Dasher, 14, had the time of his life performing as an opening act for country star Cledus T. Judd at the Clubhouse at Rye Patch.
Dasher, who lives in Liberty County, first performed in front of a crowd three years ago and since then he has been hooked on performing.
“He would be singing around the house and I would hear him and he sounded good,” said Dasher’s mother, Melissa Cook. “Then we started singing karaoke at home and he loved it, but I couldn’t get him to sing in public.”
Cook finally got her son to perform at a local benefit concert and since then, he’s always ready to take the stage.
Dasher has performed at the Rattlesnake Round Up in Claxton, the Peanut Festival in Brooklet and Relay for Life in Ludowici.
The teen said he became interested in music during visits with his grandmother, Carol Walker, in Long County.
“I would be at her house and she would be listening to these old Motown songs and I just loved them,” he said.
Motown hits were the first songs Dasher sang in public but as his voiced changed, he began singing country tunes.
For his performance at the Judd concert, Dasher covered Kenny Chesney’s “1970 Something” and Toby Keith’s “I Should Have Been a Cowboy.”
Judd praised his opening act’s performance and even took Dasher’s CD back to Nashville with him.
Dasher said he hopes his music will make him a star, and if that happens, it will be because of his mother.
“I appreciate everyone who has helped me and supported me, but especially my mom,” he said. “She was the one who pushed me to start and she’s my biggest fan.”
