Here are some of the issues area residents are discussing. The statements were phoned in anonymously, so the Courier does not know if they are true, nor what motivated the callers:

The overall jobless rate in Georgia is said to be 8.1 percent with the national average of 7.2 percent. Liberty and Long is said to be at 7.4 percent, which is above the national average. We are far from immune from this national recession.

Beware, Midway residents, the Midway Police are out to get you for cracked windshields, taillights, headlights not on your vehicle. They can’t make enough otherwise, so they give you tickets for these little things.

We have a man in Lake George who got fed up with the POA not doing its job. He paid two employees to cut and edge our four medians. Used his own front end loader to haul dirt to fill low spots at the fire department. Then they cut our playground. He is Gary Tabb, owner of Pizza Peddler in Midway. We love you, Gary.

Has anyone else noticed our products are shrinking? For example, you used to get a pound of bacon, now it’s only 12 ounces. It used to be called the incredible shrinking product. They’d give you less, but charge more, hoping we wouldn’t notice. What is this world coming to?

Now with school starting, I hope that pretty young lady working as a crossing guard at Gen. Screven and Gause Street will be back. She made my day every day on my way to work on Fort Stewart. She obviously enjoyed her job.

Who is going to use that rail-to-trail in this Georgia heat?
