Soldiers lose lives

POSTED: June 5, 2007 10:11 a.m.
The Department of Defense announced the death of two 3rd Infantry Division soldiers serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom on Thursday.
Sgt. Allen Dunckley of Yardley, Pa., and Sgt. Christopher Gonzalez of Winslow, Ariz., died on May 14 in Salman Pak, Iraq from wounds suffered when their unit came in contact with enemy forces using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.
Both 25-year-olds were assigned to the division’s 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
Dunckley, who served in Iraq as a member of the U.S. Marines at the start of the war, began his second tour of the country in March. He was due to return in about a year and a half.
Dunckley was married with two children, a 3-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.
Gonzalez was a member of the Navajo Nation, a Native American sovereignty, and was also serving a second tour in Iraq, according to an official for the nation.
To honor the fallen soldier, Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley issued a proclamation recognizing his service and ordered the flags within the nation to be flown at half-staff from May 16-20.
Gonzalez is survived by a wife, one child and his mother.
