On Friday night in downtown Hinesville, wicked witches and creepy goblins lurked around every corner as pirates, princesses and petite bumblebees invaded local shops and eateries. But scary or sweet, the costumed crusaders were after one thing: candy.
Area children and their families celebrated the first annual Scarecrow Stroll and Beggars Night, trick-or-treating at downtown businesses and enjoying hayrides, pumpkin decorating and treasure hunts.
Missie Mays helped her toddler, Sydney Mays, get the hang of trick-or-treating. Sydney, 1, who was dressed as a bumblebee, seemed to catch on quickly.
“We’re having a good time,” Mays said. “We just wanted to come and check out what was going on down here.”
She said her daughter was excited at the idea of getting so many sweets.
All of downtown was open to trick-or-treaters and more than 20 businesses participated, handing out candy and other treats. A long line of superheroes and furry critters formed in front of Gold Mender Jewelers as Chrissie Hill passed out balloon animals to children.

“It’s so much fun. Everybody loves balloon animals,” Hill said. “My son Duncan is our clown and he’s also our balloon expert.” Hill said her son knows how to make about 15 different animals, but limited his offerings to a half dozen basic forms since he was so busy.
“We’re having a good time and we hope everyone’s having fun and enjoying the evening,” said Hill, who sported an elaborate Colonel Sanders costume.
Lively scarecrows created and donated by area businessed decorated the streets,  putting visitors in the Halloween spirit.
The event was sponsored by the Hinesville Downtown Partners.
