The city of Riceboro and the Hampton Island Reserve will host the third annual Ricefest this weekend to celebrate the grain for which the city was named.
Comedian Spike Davis, who has opened for Steve Harvey and appeared on BET, will headline a jam-packed entertainment schedule that also includes a host of local artists, entertainers and musical guests.
A group of Midway Middle School students will give a history presentation about rice and its influence on the city.
But the real tasty treats will come during the rice cook-off. According to Riceboro City Council member Chris Stacy, there will be four categories judged on site: rice and vegetable, rice and seafood, rice and meat, and rice and desert.
“Each one of those will have a cash award for first and second place,” Davis said.
But, according to Davis, that’s only the beginning of the fun.
“There’s also a lot of stuff for kids,” Stacy said. The event will feature dunking booths, horse rides and Geechee culture demonstrations.
Festival-goers may also go home with gifts. There will be hourly drawings for prizes that, of course, are centered on rice. The prizes include items such as crock pots and rice cookers.
Also, Davis said, for the first time, there will be a blood drive.
The festival, which is free and open to the public, is from 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday in downtown Riceboro, near city hall.
