Long County had its second annual country Christmas tree lighting ceremony Thursday at the Old Well Pavilion in Ludowici.
The event kicked off at 8 p.m. as a crowd of about 100 huddled together for warmth as chilly temperatures moved in.
Local businessman Tim Works, one of the organizers, welcomed the group.
“We’re glad everyone came out. This is the second year we’ve had this and last year was good, but this year there are more of us out here, and we plan on it getting better every year,” Works said.
After he finished, the town Christmas tree was lit, it’s decorations glittering against the inky night sky.
The tree, according to Works, was donated by Wes and Beverly Johnson.
Santa and Mrs. Claus dropped by to collect children’s Christmas lists and Mrs. Claus handed out candycanes.
Leah Simpson, Fred Kopp and Deb Maschke traveled from Bristol to entertain the audience with Christmas carols. After their performance, local musician Donna Jackson took the microphone and crooned a few tunes.
The crowd enjoyed hot cider, coffee, cocoa, cookies, cup cakes and other treats.
Ludowici City Council member Gwendolyn Davis, who brought her family to the ceremony, said she enjoyed the evening.
“Its just beautiful, everything is just beautiful. We have a great turnout and this year is even better than last year,” Davis said.
