Post after-school program offers rides

POSTED: February 10, 2010 12:06 p.m.
Fort Stewart’s Child, Youth and School Services is offering after-school transportation to students at Joseph Martin Elementary School and Snelson Golden Middle School who are currently enrolled in CYSS programs.
This program is in the pilot phase and is currently serving 10 students, according to Kevin Larson, Fort Stewart’s communications chief for the public affairs office.
“Joseph Martin and Snelson Golden were chosen due to their close proximity to Fort Stewart,” Larson said. “Plans to include more off-post schools is contingent on how successful the pilot program is through the conclusion of the school year and on the availability of funding for the next school year.”
The new after-school service enables children of military personnel to participate in school-age services, pre-K, youth center and EDGE programs. Larson said the primary purpose of the program is to reach out to families living off post and give them the opportunity for their students to participate in CYSS after-school programs.
“The main criteria is that the students need to be eligible and registered to utilize CYSS after school programs,” he said. There’s no cost for the transportation, but there is a cost for the elementary students to use the after school pre-K center and the School Age Services Center; middle school students can participate in the Youth Center for free.
Both the Youth Center and the SAS center have computer lab instructors and homework instructors to assist students, Larson added.
Parents of registered children who attend either of the schools must sign a transportation consent form at the CYSS office on post, building 443. For more information on registration and programs, call 767-2312 or the school liaison office at 767-6533.
