The Liberty County Community and Area Mass Choir is growing in popularity and size.
In January 2003, conductor and composer Ronald G. Calhoun was approached by local musicians who wanted an outlet for singers in the area. Calhoun founded the choir, volunteering his time and frequently traveling lengthy distances to lead and direct rehearsals.
The group’s first performance, “100 Voices for Easter Concert,” was staged in Hinesville in April 2003. Since then, the Mass Choir has performed many community concerts, including Handel’s “Messiah” at Fort Stewart, concerts in Hinesville and at Fort Pulaski National Monument, the annual Mayor’s Thanksgiving Service, the “I’m Amazed” concert at Marne Chapel on Fort Stewart and the community covenant signing on Fort Stewart.
The choir also performed the music of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.
The Mass Choir has programs for singers and musicians that include ensembles, quartets, trios, solos, instrumentals and a community chorus that will represent the Mass Choir at programs in the area such as the Warriors Walk ceremonies and Christmas tree lightings. The choir is a nonprofit organization.
The group rehearses at 7 p.m. each Tuesday evening at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church on Gen. Stewart Way in Hinesville. Singers and musicians are invited. Anyone who is interested can call Calhoun at 977-3322 or e-mail lcca.mass.choir@bellsouth.net. Participants can get books and rehearsal CDs by calling music coordinator Eleanor Hudson at 876-7610 or e-mailing BEHud@hotmail.com.
The Mass Choir’s upcoming concert, “Messiah: For Easter” is Saturday evening, April 3, at the First United Methodist Church in Hinesville. There are openings for tenor and bass soloists.
The choir’s board of directors consists of Calhoun, Judy Forshee, Frances Moody, Pat Kicklighter, Hudson, Virie Walton and Mary Montoya. Assistant directors are Forshee and Donna Pearson. Accompaniment is provided by Ruthie Brannen. Hudson and Paul Hudson are the music coordinators.
