All-Stars ready to compete

POSTED: July 10, 2007 5:02 a.m.
Now that all the hardware has been awarded, it’s time for the Liberty County Recreation Department’s best players to face the region’s star recreation athletes.
The Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s District All-star playoffs get under way Monday in baseball and Tuesday in softball.
All of the baseball games will be at the Ware County Recreation Department in Waycross, while the softball tournaments are at the North Glynn Recreation Complex in Brunswick.
LCRD Director Jimmy Martin said the competition is stiff and the teams must play hard.
“I’m optimistic, but I know it’s very tough competition and the teams have to play their absolute best to do well in the district,” Martin said.
If pre-district tournaments are any indicator, then the Mite and Midget softball teams are in good shape.
Both teams won their respective tournaments in Richmond Hill last weekend.
“Every year, we’ve got as good of chances of anybody. It boils down to how well a team plays,” he said. “We’ve had really good teams that lost out quickly and other teams that were not as talented, but they played as well as they could play and did really well.”
District winners advance to the eight-team state tournament.
