After several close finishes, the Coastal Crew Rebels finally broke through to win the big one.
The 13-under basketball team swept the competition this past weekend in Savannah to claim the RiverStreet Classic championship.
They started the tournament with a 59-32 win over Augusta Power, followed by a 67-43 shellacking of GT Stars out of Atlanta.
In the finals, the Rebels had to face the Power again, which presented no problem.
Christopher Simpson, who scored 24 against the Power in the first game, hung 25 on the Power again to help lead the Rebels to a 71-47 win.
“Those kids were ecstatic,” Rebels coach Derrick Brooks said. “That was their first championship win and they had been building up for it. It was a good one for them.”
Brooks said that the championship will help the program.
“The win gives them a lot of confidence and they’re starting to believe in what we teach them now,” he said. “Anytime you win one (championship) it boosts your confidence a lot.”
In the championship, Simpson also had 7 assists. Darius Mowbray scored 14 points and had 9 rebounds and Shaquille Morgan scored 12.
In the opener against the Power, Mowbray recorded a double-double, scoring 10 and rebounding 12. Javonte Richey scored 8 and dished out 8 assists.
Shadrach Thornton led the Rebels with 14 points, while grabbing 9 rebounds in the win over the Stars. Mowbray scored 8 and rebounded 10 and Simpson poured in 6 points.
Additional players contributing to the championship include Juwon Simmons, Michael Farrior, Blaine Robinson, Leon Graham, Cameo Fenner, Melvin King, Dawannes Butler, Larry Murray and Anthony Campbell.
The Rebels practice at Bradwell Institute and Brooks said he is grateful for BI basketball coach David Jones’ support.
