YMCA to honor teen achievers

POSTED: July 14, 2007 5:03 a.m.
The YMCA of Coastal Georgia will present its third annual awards gala at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Hyatt Regency Riverfront in Savannah. This year’s theme is “Priceless Achievers.”
The black-tie event culminates the annual YMCA Teen Achievers program. It is meant to salute the academic accomplishments of Coastal Georgia Teen Achievers with scholarships. It also recognizes the corporate and community volunteerism of adult achievers with award presentations. This year’s lead corporate gold sponsor is the Liberty County Health Department in Hinesville.
Corporate investors include Savannah State University, Coastal Cooperative Foundation, the Georgia Ports Authority, OMI, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Simmons Jr. of Family Dentistry.
Dawn Baker, WTOC TV news anchor, will be the mistress of ceremonies.
The keynote speaker will be motivational speaker and NFL Super Bowl XXVI winner Fred Stokes.
Stokes was born in Vidalia. In 1982, Coach Erk Russell offered him a full scholarship to play with the newly developed Georgia Southern Eagles in Statesboro.
Stokes played offensive tackle and was a vital part of the 1985 and 1986 national championship teams. Also, in 1986, he was voted to first team All-American as an offensive tackle. In 1987, he was drafted as a defensive end by the Los Angeles Rams and signed to a two-year contract. He was then picked up by the Washington Redskins and signed to a four-year contract.
While playing with the Washington Rams, Stokes received the much-coveted Super Bowl ring, as the Rams beat the Buffalo Bills in the 1992 Super Bowl.
Stokes retired from the National Football League in 1997 after playing for 10 years. He lives in Tarrytown and travels around the country speaking to various organizations. He is married and has three sons.
Individual tickets to the gala are $50 and include reception, dinner, entertainment and dancing for teens afterwards.
Tables of 10 are $500 and may be purchased at the Habersham YMCA at 6400 Habersham St., Savannah or the Liberty County Armed Services Family YMCA at 201 Mary Lou Dr. in Hinesville or by calling Freda McKnight at 312-1054 or Renea Camper at 572-6000.
The YMCA Teen Achievers program objectives include:
• Raising the academic standards of at-risk youth
• Exposing students to diverse career options
• Providing positive role models whose success and knowledge will inspire youth to reach their goals
• Creating channels for continuing community involvement by business and industry
