A Liberty County High School student charged with carrying a weapon on school grounds was recently sentenced to at least six months at a Georgia youth development campus.
The 17-year-old was arrested May 1 after a photo showing the teen sitting at a desk in one of the school’s classrooms posing with a gun in his right hand was discovered on a campus computer.
The student, who was 16 at the time, originally told investigators he was holding a BB gun in the photo, but later recanted his story and admitted to posing with a gun, according to court documents.
The teen was also charged with dissemination of information relating to terroristic acts, but the charge was dismissed.
The dismissed charge stemmed from the teen posting photos on his MySpace.com account showing him holding a gun with a blue bandanna across his shoulder and making hand gestures.
A charge of terroristic acts, related to another photo of the teen holding a gun in a classroom — surrounded by students appearing to be doing class work — and threats of violence he made against two other students, was also dismissed.
The teen was scheduled to begin serving his sentence at the Middle Georgia Wilderness Institute in Cochran on June 18.
