Explosives found in Valdosta storage unit

POSTED: July 18, 2007 5:02 a.m.

VALDOSTA -- Authorities evacuated homes and businesses around a storage facility after explosives were found there.

Police were called to the scene Monday after a bail bondsman from Florida, who was entering a storage unit to retrieve its renter's property, found the explosives, said Brian Childress of the Valdosta Police Department.

Also found in the storage unit was a significant amount of firearms including handguns, rifles and machine guns, Childress said.

The storage unit was rented in March by Christopher Riendeau, 38, who was wanted in Collier County, Florida, after violating a $100,000 bond for narcotics trafficking, Childress said.

A Georgia Bureau of Investigation bomb squad detonated the explosives. There were no injuries or property damage, Childress said.

A joint investigation will be conducted in cooperation with Valdosta police, the FBI, the GBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

"Because of the items found in his storage rental unit, Riendeau is certainly a suspect we are looking into at this time," Childress said.
