After starting the season 6-1 and at one time being 10-2, the Long County boy’s basketball team lost both of their games this past weekend and now has lost five of their last six games.
On Friday the team traveled to Brunswick to take on the 3-AAAA Pirates.  In gut wrenching fashion, they lost narrowly 58-60.  This was the second time the Pirates beat the Blue Tide, and they were the only team to sweep the Long County boys all season.
In spite of the Tide’s recent slump, they still went into Saturday night’s game with a chance to win the 2-AA region title, being only one game behind the Appling County Pirates.  The Tide knew they could play with their opponent, having already defeated them earlier in the season.
The first half was about as close as it could get with Appling County having a one-point lead 23-22 at the break.  But in the second half, the Pirates pulled away and outscored Long County, 36 to 27 to win the game by a final score of 59-49.  With the win, the Pirates secured the 2-AA Region Title.
In the game, the Blue Tide’s Justin Boyd scored 10 points and Jimmy Bacon led all Long County shooter’s with 15.
The Tide now has an overall regular season record of 12 wins and 8 losses.  Fortunately, for Long County, they have already sewn up the no. 2 seed in the region with a 9-4 mark, and a better season record.
The Blue Tide played the Brantley County Herons last night in Ludowici, and will travel to Baxley next week for the 2-AA Region Tournament.
