Hinesville physician sentenced

POSTED: July 28, 2007 5:03 a.m.
Victor Cruz Bautista, 64, of Hinesville, has been sentenced  in U.S. District Court in Savannah, according to Edmund A. Booth Jr., acting United States attorney.
Appearing before Chief U.S. District Judge William T. Moore Jr., Bautista, a licensed physician, was sentenced to a three-year term of probation and given a fine of $5,000 on his conviction for making a false statement relating to a health care matter in violation of 18 U.S.C. section 1035(a)(2).
During a change of plea hearing, the evidence showed Bautista submitted a claim for reimbursement to Medicaid for services he did not provide to a patient in August of 2006 at his practice in Midway.
Booth praised the investigative efforts of the MACE Drug Task Force, United States Department of Health and Human Services and the Georgia Drugs and Narcotics Agency which led to the indictment and successful prosecution.
The United States was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Karl Knoche.
