Firefighters give muscle diseases the boot

POSTED: August 9, 2010 9:56 a.m.
LUDOWICI — The Ludowici/Long County Fire Department recently teamed up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for a “Fill the Boot” campaign . During the past two weekends, firefighters raised about $3,200, which will be used to fight muscular dystrophy. The firefighters accepted donations from motorists at the intersection of Highways 84 and 57.
The Ludowici department met its goal and surpassed funds raised by surrounding stations in Hinesville, Walthourville and Jesup.
“This new department is really excited and happy to donate its time for MDA,” fundraising coordinator Coleen Harvey said.
The firefighters and MDA representatives said they’re thankful  to Ludowici residents for their support and generosity during the campaign. Fire Chief Darrell Balance and boot drive coordinator Capt. Richard Truman said they want to start earlier next year to collect even more donations.
For more than 50 years, firefighters in North America have raised more money for MDA than any other cooperating organization, contributing more than $200 million. The donations collected by firefighters help fund local clinics and support groups, send children to MDA summer camp and support research aimed at treatments and cures for neuromuscular diseases.
MDA is a voluntary health agency working to find treatments and cures for 43 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, medical and community services and professional and public health education.
