Ladies, it’s time to show off your best bra.
The Suzie Q’s are holding an “Art Your Bra” contest in which participants creatively decorate bras to be showcased and auctioned off at a Sept. 15 gala.
All proceeds from the gala will be donated to area breast cancer treatment facilities. A gas fund will also be established for local women who have to drive to Savannah to receive their radiation or chemotherapy treatments.
Contestants are asked to start with any colored bra, around a size 36C, and decorate it with beads, lace, feathers, rhinestones, sequins and printed fabric swatches to make it stand out for a panel of three judges.
Winners will be selected for creativity, novelty and originality.
Ribbons will be placed on the winning entries before the public arrives. Attendees also will have an opportunity to vote their favorites in the people’s choice award.
The Suzie Q’s, also known as “the Q’s,” are a community group dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness and money to pay for mammograms for women who can’t afford them, founder Deidre Howell said.
 “I have several very close friends who have been treated for breast cancer in the past few years in Liberty County,” she said. “I see what they go through with treatments and not knowing what happens next. If this event can bring awareness of breast cancer, then all the effort toward it is worth it.”
The group got the idea to decorate bras for auction from Adelphi University in New York, which started
Creative Cups, a “thought-provoking art exhibition fundraising event,” according to the university’s website, www.adelphi.edu/communityservices/creativecups.
Suzie Q’s co-founder Leah Poole, who said she loves the individually unique aspect of the contest, created the sample “little black bra” to show others what they can do with their own designs.
“My aunt had breast cancer twice, and my grandma passed away from it,” Poole said. “So to me personally, it means a lot.”  
The gala, which will be from 5-7 p.m. at MidCoast Regional Airport, will feature door prizes such as massage certificates and gift baskets. All prizes have been donated by local merchants.
The celebration’s theme is “Celebrating Accomplishments at all Altitudes!,” which organizers say offers historical insight about the women who launched efforts to bring female aviation brigades to Camp Stewart during World War II.
Howell said movie clips that tie into the theme and big band music will play throughout the evening. Next year, she hopes to have a live band perform.
As for tips on how to create the perfect bra?
“The key is lots of hot glue,” said Howell, who decorated a “Mardi Gras bra.”
She said depending on the intricacy of the design, decorating a bra can take as little or as much time as a participant wants to spend.
All bras must have a title for submission. For those who wish to keep their bras after the showcase, denote so on the registration form upon submission. All other bras will be auctioned off to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.
Upcoming events include a $7 all-you-can-eat pink pancake dinner at Poole’s to benefit local breast cancer victims on Sept. 13 from 5-8 p.m. in correlation with the stop by Pink Heals Tour.
The next Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is on April 16 in Savannah.
