Canoe trip on Ogeechee Saturday

POSTED: August 7, 2007 5:02 a.m.
Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper will host a paddle down the Ogeechee River next Saturday.
OCRK is partnering with Ogeechee Outfitters to provide a safe and fun river excursion.
The daylong outing will include shuttle to the starting point and lunch. Riverkeeper Chandra Brown and biologist Dr. Jim Wedincamp will be along to answer any questions that participants may have about the river’s ecosystem and wildlife.
“The focus is on the river,” Melanie Hendrix, outreach coordinator for Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper, said. “Industry, recreation and wildlife all thrive on the life giving waters.”
A recent paddle trip highlighted these points as Hendrix and fellow OCRK staff person Watershed Specialist Dianna Wedincamp, witnessed a river otter, sunbathers, fishermen and a logging operation.
The paddle will begin at 9 a.m. at Morgan’s Bridge on Highway 204, where paddlers will meet and register. From there, Ogeechee Outfitter Connie Shreve will shuttle participants to the starting point near Meldrim.
The 6.2-mile paddle along the Effingham and Bryan County line is meant to be a leisurely trip, with stops for lunch and picture opportunities. The estimated time is about four hours.
Paddler experience is rated beginner and above. All participants should be able to swim and have some experience in canoes and/or kayak. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent in advance from Ogeechee Outfitters by contacting Connie Shreve at (912) 748-6716 or ccanoes@hotmail.com
The registration fee is $20 per/paddler. All paddlers will receive shuttle, lunch, paddling with a naturalist and CPR/First aid trained professionals. All proceeds benefit OCRK. RSVP by July 25 by contacting Melanie Hendrix at (912) 764-2017 or mhendrix@ocrk.org
