Coastal accepting scholarship applications

POSTED: February 22, 2007 5:07 a.m.
Coastal Electric Cooperative is accepting applications for the prestigious Walter Harrison Scholarship.
This year eight scholarships will be awarded to students throughout Georgia.
Sponsored by the electric cooperatives of Georgia, including Coastal, the $1,000 scholarships are offered to students of all ages attending any accredited two- or four-year university, college or vocational-technical institute in Georgia.
“This scholarship is not just for graduating high school seniors but for anyone who seeks technical school training or an associate’s or bachelor’s degree,” said Anne Cordeiro at Coastal Electric.  “This is to help students of all ages get started on their careers.  Some scholarships have gone to older students who wanted to return to school to improve their circumstances.”
The Walter Harrison Scholarship Program was created in 1985 by Georgia Electric Membership Corp., the trade association for Georgia’s 42 electric cooperatives.  The award pays tribute to the late Walter Harrison, a pioneer in rural electrification and an electric cooperative leader at local, state and national levels.
Since its inception, the program has awarded $100,000 in scholarships, in cooperation with Georgia’s electric cooperatives, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and Georgia Rural Electric Supply Corp.
The Walter Harrison Scholarship is awarded to students who excel in SAT scores, academic standing, scholastic honors, plus demonstrate a financial need.  To be considered, students must be accepted or enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program, complete a two-page application and write a two-page autobiographical sketch with references to plans and goals.  To receive a scholarship application, visit www.coastalelectric.coop or call Cordeiro at 880-2268.  The deadline for returning applications is Feb. 12.
Coastal Electric Cooperative, a Touchstone Energy Partner, serves 14,000 members in Bryan, Liberty, Long and McIntosh counties. Touchstone Energy is a national alliance of local, consumer-owned electric cooperatives providing high standards of service to customers large and small.
