Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup recently was named 2010 Small Hospital of the Year by the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals at its 27th annual conference.
This year, WMH opened its Long County Health Center, a mid-level health care clinic, in a neighboring county that previously did not have a hospital. Averaging about 150 patients per month and growing, the clinic provides wellness and medical care in a rural setting. The center aids under-served patients by offering less expensive care and treating everyone, regardless of ability to pay.
In an effort to keep community youth healthy and safe, WMH supplied the local school system with a licensed athletic trainer who attends all practices and games. The trainer teaches proper stretching techniques and offers assistance to injured students as well as follow-up rehabilitation.
The GACH Hospital of the Year Award spotlights the value of Georgia’s community hospitals. Hospital submissions were evaluated by a panel of judges from public relations agency Porter Novelli, focusing on initiatives that support direct patient access, improved access to under-served populations, major economic development initiatives, quality-of-life initiatives and community benefits.
“At a time when hospitals are being asked to do more and more with less, the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals is proud to recognize the hospitals that are making a tremendous impact in their local communities and overcoming obstacles to balance these demands each and every day,” GACH President Monty Veazey said.
“We are humbled and honored by the confidence and recognition given to us by the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals,” said WMH CEO Joseph P. Ierardi.  “We believe our staff and physicians are the best in the business.  There are truly compassionate, caring individuals in every area of our facility.  This award is dedicated to our employees and affiliates as well as the people we serve. Without our patients and their families, we would have no purpose.”
