The Lady Tigers stormed past the Lady Pirates in Brunswick on Tuesday, beating the home team 76-56.
Lady Tiger head coach Faye Baker said her girls played well as a team, especially coming off the holiday break.
“I was real satisfied with the whole effort in that game that night,” she said.
Normally one to run a press defense, Baker said BI changed its defense against the Lady Pirates.
“We tried to make them score off the half-court set rather than allowing them to get easy transition baskets, and that worked in our favor,” she said. “I was a little concerned because I had seen Brunswick play before. They are a pretty young team but they have some guards that are fast and athletic and that is really where they hurt you in the transition game. I didn’t want to allow them to get easy baskets off of the press so we elected not to.”
Baker said Shaquoia Crockett and Quanika Hatchell had excellent games.
“They gave the ball to (Hatchell) when she was open and she was finishing well,” Baker said. “Quintunya Chapman played well. Mariah (Maternik) didn’t have a very good game offensively. You know that happens sometimes when you can’t get things going but that is why we are pleased because the others picked up and got things going the other night.”
The girls hold on to a perfect 11-0 overall and 5-0 Region 3-AAAAA record as they prepare to host Windsor Forest tonight at 6:30 p.m.
“I don’t know very much except what I remember from last year,” Baker said of the Lady Knights. “I haven’t seen them play this year. I know last year they had a couple of good athletes on their team so we are preparing for a competitive game.”
