Lady Tide still seek first win

POSTED: January 10, 2011 11:22 a.m.

The Long County High School girls basketball team has not yet won a game this year, but it’s not due to a lack of effort or a lack of heart. On Friday, the Lady Tide lost to the Pierce County Lady Bears 43-31, but they fought until the final buzzer sounded.
At the end of the first period Long County was down 11-6. In the second and third quarters, the Lady Tide kept pace with the Lady Bear as the home team put up 22 points and the Pierce team put up 26 points. In the fourth period, both teams played solid defense. The Tide held the visitors to 6 points, but were held to 3 points themselves.
“This was the first game all year where we played four quarters of basketball. We did little things tonight that we haven’t been doing — rebounding, boxing out, free throws. Even though we lost, I’m pretty pleased … don’t get me wrong, we’re still miles and miles from where we want to be but we are making progress,” head coach Ryan Bailey said.
Long County top scorers: Shameka Richardson 16, Jameka Boyd 5, Miranda McDowell 5, Toni McCray 4, Raven Rose 1.
Pierce County top scorer: Christine Braddy 14
Last night the Lady Tide took on Wayne County High School in Jesup. Results from that game will be in this Wednesday’s Courier.
