Senior guard Jordan Johnson was chosen as this week’s WTOC player of the week. Johnson led the Highlanders with 26 points in their Jan. 11 win over Bethesda. He had 18 points against Curtis Baptist on Friday.

Johnson told WTOC’s DaShawn Brown he expects to win a state title this year and spends every free moment practicing and perfecting his skills.

Jones said he was pleased with Johnson’s recognition and added senior DJ Felder also was being considered.

"Jordan has had solid performances all year, he and DJ both. Both of their names had been brought up several times by Rick Snow and Dayshawn Brown," Jones said. "And we’ve had some supporters that have constantly e-mailed and pushed to get Jordan and or DJ nominated."

The coach said Snow called him Sunday morning and notified him that Johnson had been chosen.

"Jordan’s stats are good," Jones said. "His field goal percentage is really good, he has a good average and he has a lot of leadership qualities as a guard. He just plays hard and I think it rubs off on the other players."

Johnson is averaging 22.8 points per game and has scored 456 points in his Highlander career.

Jones has coached Johnson for three years. It started when he was still coaching Bradwell Institute and Johnson was in the ninth grade. Johnson was among the few freshmen Jones started on a varsity squad.

Johnson transferred to FPCA his junior year after learning Jones would be the new head coach.
