Fans are hot prizes for seniors

POSTED: September 1, 2007 5:03 a.m.
With the sweltering, record breaking temperature, people are doing everything they can to beat the heat and stay cool.
Senior citizens are especially susceptible to the intense heat, which causes dizziness, heat cramps, fainting, headaches, heat strokes and possibly even death.
The Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Authority sponsored a fan drawing on July 20 to help senior citizens. It was a small gesture to let them know they are special and to show the agency’s concern.
“Seniors who come to the Hazel B. Carter Senior Citizens’ Center in Hinesville and those who receive home-delivered meals had the opportunity to participate,” Gloria Simmons said.
Simmons serves as the director of the center.
Willie Wilson, director of the Hinesville Chapter of the Girl Scouts of America, was in charge of the drawing. The drawing took place at the center, and participants waited patiently, hoping their names would be called.
Three new fans were given. Winners were Nancy Mooney of Riceboro, Wilhelmina Jasper of Midway and Samuel Bacon of Hinesville. Mooney and Jasper are congregant seniors who visit the center for meals and various activities. Bacon is home-bound, but receives meals from the center as well.
The Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Authority sponsored the fan giveaway in three counties.
“These counties include Liberty Glynn, and McIntosh. The agency bought the fans, and this is just another way to let our clients know we care and are concerned about their well-being,” Simmons said.
Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Authority will also sponsor a health fair on Wednesday at the Hazel B. Carter Senior Citizens’ Center from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.  There will be free health screenings, and speakers from the Hinesville Police Department and a physician.
“We plan to have lots of free prizes,” Simmons said.
