A Long County High School teacher reportedly was beaten by her husband last week near a hunting club in Appling County.
According to Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach, a caller reported Tuesday afternoon to the Appling County 911 center that a man was beating a woman in a parked vehicle. The caller then told the dispatcher that the car, a Mercedes, turned onto Highway 341. Deloach said Deputies Scottie Tanner and Joey Coleman responded to the call and were told the Mercedes had turned onto Barfield Break Road, which leads to the hunting club.
The deputies proceeded down Barfield Break Road and discovered the Mercedes parked off the road. They stopped to investigate.
According to Deloach, Tanner approached the car first and said he saw a man beating a woman. Tanner drew his weapon and ordered the man out of the car. The woman also exited the vehicle at this time, beaten and bloodied, Tanner said.
The man was arrested and identified as Calvin Smith, who had just been released from the Liberty County Jail earlier that morning. The woman, who was found to be his wife, reportedly is a business teacher at Long County High School.
The victim was transported to a local hospital but law enforcement officials did not have an update on her condition at press time, nor could they confirm whether she had been released.
According to Deloach, Smith has been charged with aggravated battery, kidnapping and false imprisonment. He currently is in the Appling County Jail.
