A fire in an industrial building near Airport Road in Hinesville spurred the evacuation of Savannah Technical College and the Liberty County School System’s bus barn Tuesday morning.
Hinesville Fire Department Capt. Rick Perryman said the fire was called into the department around 10:30 a.m. by a Savannah Technical College staffer, who said an alarm was going off and water could be seen coming from the building on 99 Techwood Drive. When firefighters arrived at CTech Metal Finishing Inc., they found light smoke coming from inside the building.
“The building houses numerous forms of chemicals, however, where the fire broke out there were no chemicals stored in that area,” Perryman said.
The evacuation of the surrounding buildings primarily was a precautionary measure, according to the captain.  “After the hazmat team conducted a water and air test of the facility, we found no traces of chemical contamination in the structure. At no time from the test results was the public in danger,” Perryman said.
The company, which is run by a small crew, supports the aviation and battery industry by working on metals used in planes and batteries.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. Perryman said the Georgia state
fire marshal will conduct
an investigation to determine what caused the fire. The fire was suppressed by sprinkler systems in the building and firefighters extinguished the flames. Damage, according to Perryman, primarily was from
water.
Once the area was deemed safe, classes at the college resumed.
