Players drawn to Georgia coast for 'Ultimate Disc'

POSTED: March 9, 2011 3:36 p.m.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Officials say nearly 200 college teams are descending on the Georgia coast for the High Tide Ultimate, an ultimate disc tournament being held in Glynn County near Brunswick.

Players follow rules similar to those used in football, and score by throwing a flying disc similar to a Frisbee to a teammate in the end zone.

Ed Pulkinen, director of the Coastal Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes, says the event began 15 years ago as a small tournament in Savannah.

He says it has grown to include 55 teams this week, 92 next week and 25 when the tournament moves back to Savannah for its third and closing week.

Pulkinen says teams competing this week are from schools such as Valparaiso University in Indiana and lesser-known schools such as Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.
