A Riceboro woman was one of three women honored at the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia’s Women of Distinction Luncheon on March 4 at the Charles Morris Center in Savannah.

They chosen for setting examples of excellence in their professions and communities. This year’s recipients were Lula Baker of Riceboro, Jane Feiler and Toby Hollenberg.
For 34 years, Baker was an English teacher at the junior-high and high-school levels. She also was a teacher in the gifted-student program, where she set high standards in her classroom and students strived to meet her expectations. She believes that when people expect more, they get more. Baker is remembered by generations of Savannah/Chatham County residents as the teacher who possessed the right blend of knowledge, compassion and tough love.
Since retiring, Baker has championed a number of charitable organizations. She has served as president of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc – Savannah Alumnae Chapter, a public service sorority, and has worked closely with the sorority’s mentoring groups, Delta Teen Life, Delta Academy and Delta GEMS, where she mentored young women who were considered “at risk.”
As secretary of the board of directors for the Savannah Association for the Blind, Baker supports the nonprofit organization for people who are blind or visually impaired. She is a member of the Savannah Music Festival education committee, a volunteer for the Savannah Music Festival events, a board member and volunteer for the American Cancer Society, secretary and board member of the Savannah Science Museum and a member of the worship committee for the United Methodist Church South Georgia Conference.
