Installation police arrested a Fort Stewart soldier Saturday following a 22-minute standoff that began as a domestic dispute in post housing. The incident ended peacefully with no injuries, according to a public affairs news release.
The Fort Stewart Department of Emergency Services, Department of the Army Civilian Police and Military Police responded to the domestic disturbance call just before noon Saturday at the Liberty Woods home of Spc. Allen Sanchez. Sanchez is attached to the 135th Quartermaster Battalion. Sanchez's wife made the initial 911 call, according to the release.
The dispute began as an argument between the couple, but escalated after Sanchez donned body armor and grabbed a rifle he had on the premises. His wife then left the home with their children and called authorities, Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson confirmed. The standoff ended after a Department of the Army Civilian police officer convinced Sanchez to surrender, according to the release. Sanchez did not physically harm his wife or children, Larson said.
Sanchez is a veteran of one Iraq deployment, having returned in 2009.
He has been charged with domestic violence and cruelty to children. Fort Stewart authorities will continue to investigate the case.
