A Glennville woman was electrocuted Thursday while she was working in a poultry house in the northern portion of Long County.
According to Long County Sheriff’s Department investigator Nickey Anderson, 29-year-old Crystal Martin was working in the poultry house with Craig Burkhalter at about 11:45 p.m.
Burkhalter told authorities he heard a loud noise as he was walking away from Martin. When he turned around, he saw Martin lying on the ground near the feed system.
Burkhalter said he ran to the woman, calling her name, but she did not respond. He then called for the victim’s mother, Lois Martin, who also was an employee, and who was working outside the house.
According to Anderson, Burkhalter and the victim’s mother tried to get a response from her daughter but were unsuccessful.
Burkhalter said he tried to call 911 on his cell phone, but was unable to get a signal, so he contacted his father, L. W. Burkhalter, with a radio, who then called 911 Emergency medical services personnel attempted to revive Martin, but were unable to do so.
According to Anderson, the woman’s body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Medical Examiner in Savannah, and  the death was ruled “an accident by low voltage electrocution”.
According to Anderson, L.W. Burkhalter owns the poultry house.
