The Peace Officers Association of Georgia and the Canoochee EMC Foundation gave the Long County High School prom committee $2,500 last week for planning an alcohol-free prom. The high school was nominated for the award by Shirley Howard, who lives in the county and is a member of the CEMCF.
“This money will be very helpful with our prom,” junior-class sponsor Christi Crews said. “We have had fundraisers, but over the last couple of years money has been tight, so we really can use it.”
The donation will go toward a live disc jockey and decorations for the upcoming prom, Crews said.
POAG Secretary/Treasurer John Conley said the officers have donated funds to more than 70 high schools in the past nine years.
“We like working with the smaller communities because those high schools really need the money. We enjoy doing it, and we’ll be a part of it right up to the prom by having some of our members at the prom this year as chaperones,” he said.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters, Board of Education Chairman Dempsey Golden and LCHS Principal Scotty Hattaway were on hand for the presentation.
“We are thankful to the (Peace Officers Association) and Canoochee EMC for this money. We also are proud to promote having an alcohol-free prom,” Waters said.
The 2011 LCHS prom will be from 7 p.m.-midnight Saturday, April 16, at the high school gymnasium.
