Former Liberty County High School baseball player Chris Arnold has started 15 of the past 18 games for the Savannah State Tigers.

The University of Miami men’s basketball team was eliminated from the National Invitational Tournament after Alabama beat them, 79-64, on March 23.

However, former LCHS star Rion Brown made an impact in his first season at Miami, playing in 35 games and starting four. Brown averaged 16.7 minutes per game.

He made 50 of 137 field-goal attempts and was 32 of 88 from beyond the 3-point line. Brown, a true freshman, scored 155 points his first season. He had 12 offensive rebounds and 55 defensive rebounds. The ’Canes were 21-14 overall and 6-10 in their conference.

Former Lady Panther Metra Walthour had 35 starts in 35 games in her junior year as a Yellow Jacket. She averaged 31.7 minutes a game. Walthour hit 100 of 261 field-goal attempts and was 51 of 142 from behind the 3-point arc. She scored 312 points and collected seven offensive and 52 defensive rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets went 24-11 overall and 9-5 in their conference. They made it to the second round of the NCAA women’s tournament.

College baseball

Savannah State University baseball player Chris Arnold, who played at Liberty County High School, has started 15 of the Tigers’ past 18 games. The sophomore has had 59 at-bats so far, scoring 10 runs off 18 hits and six doubles and driving in 11 runs. SSU is 13-12 overall, 9-9 at home, 4-3 away and 0-0 in the conference.

Former Blue Tide pitcher Tommy Freeman is a freshman at SSU. He holds a 1-4 record. Freeman has pitched 25.1 innings, allowing 34 hits, 24 runs and 10 walks. He has recorded 18 strikeouts.

 

College softball

Former Lady Panthers softball player Cassie Standard has played in 13 games with 10 starts at SSU. She’s had 27 at-bats with four runs off seven hits and one RBI. The softball team is 10-20 overall, 7-3 at home, 1-11 away, 2-6 on neutral ground and 2-1 in the conference.
