Mother's Day is for more than your mom

POSTED: April 11, 2011 10:44 a.m.

Sons and daughters everywhere celebrate their mothers every spring on Mother’s Day. In recent years, however, the holiday has evolved from a day to honor mothers to one that recognizes all special women. So if there is a woman in your life who isn’t a biological mother — but is special nonetheless — Mother’s Day, which is less than a month away, is a great time to tell her how much she is appreciated.
There are many reasons why someone may want to honor a woman who is not his or her mother. In the case of a son or daughter whose mother has passed away or is no longer around, grandmothers or aunts can be important role models. Teachers and mentors also have special ways of touching other’s lives.
Although Mother’s Day is built around giving thanks to mom, it’s certainly acceptable to thank others. Furthermore, one needn’t wait until a specific day in May to recognize an inspirational female. This can be done all year long with certain gestures and sentiments.
Here are some ways to make Mother’s Day special, no matter who you honor:
• Create a handmade card with personalized touches that reflect a unique relationship with this special woman.
• Find out her interests and spend a day doing only what she wants to do.
• Treat her to a special dinner.
• Find something you both enjoy and then go and do that.
• Have an extended-family fiesta. Host a Mother’s Day party at home and single out all the special women in attendance.
