Bradwell Institute fell to Groves High, 11-7, on Wednesday in a key Region 3-AAAAA baseball game in Garden City.
The loss puts the Tigers in a must-win situation when they host Benedictine today.
“It is literally a playoff game,” Tigers coach Rhett Hellgren said. “BC has to win to make the playoffs, we have to win to take second and if we lose, I think we would drop to third.”
Hellgren said his team lacked the concentration and intensity they’ve shown in the previous few games.
“We had five or six errors, and in the third inning alone we had three walks and two errors,” he said. “We were not mentally ready to play.”
On the other hand, the Rebels showed up hungry, Hellgren said.
“They wanted it more,” he said.
Tigers pitcher Mitch Rogers took the loss, pitching 2 1⁄3 innings. Jacob Dill pitched 2⁄3 of an inning and Eric Wells finished the game.
“We had some hits, but our defense really did not come through for us,” Hellgren said. “This makes Friday’s game with BC really important. If we do not get focused, we could have to travel in the first round of the state playoffs.  This is crunch time.”
Today’s game also is senior day. The ceremony will start at 4:30 p.m., and the game will follow.
