It was supposed to be a day to celebrate the seniors on the Tigers baseball team.
Instead, it turned into a nightmare for Bradwell Institute coach Rhett Hellgren as Benedictine walloped the Tigers, 21-1, on Friday night at Tiger Field.
The loss dropped BI to third in Region 3-AAAAA. It also sent the Tigers packing for the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs. Benedictine, meanwhile, bumped out Groves and clinched the No. 4 playoff spot.
The game started with promise for BI. Pitcher Jacob Dill and BI’s defense kept the Cadets off the scoreboard
in the first two innings, and catcher Josh Driggers tattooed a pitch over the left-field fence for a solo home run in the second inning to put BI up, 1-0.
It was all Benedictine from there. The Cadets scored three runs in the third, another in the fourth, five in the sixth and broke the game open for good in the seventh inning with 12 runs.
Driggers, Leonard Felton, Adam Corwin and Mitch Rogers had one hit each for the Tigers. Dill recorded four strikeouts.
Bradwell dropped to 16-9 and 14-4 in 3-AAAAA. The Tigers travel to Tifton to face Region 1-AAAAA No. 2 seed Tift County (19-7, 8-4) late next week.
